Racking and Shelving Inspections

C.G Ton Lifting Consultants conduct racking and shelving inspections to assist our clients to establish a safer working environment for all its employees.

“The engineering code of conduct would enforce suitable design, even in the absence of a South African de- sign code. However, the lack of awareness, results in most (if not all) South African racking installations with no engineering exposure. Furthermore, the only statutory reference in the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993 (OHSAct), is found in the General Safety Regulations 8 (GSR8) which is very general with no specific reference to issues of risk assessment or inspections. However, GSR2 states that every employer and every user of machinery or equipment shall make an evaluation of the risk attached to any condition or situation which may arise from the activities of such employer or user. Based on this, OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Standard require that an organization shall implement procedures to cover situations where the absence could lead to deviations from the OH&S policy and objectives

C.G Ton Lifting Consultants conducts inspections on clients workshop, warehouse and maintenance stores Racking and Shelving. Our inspectors perform visual inspections as well as physical inspections on the racking and shelving according to a thorough inspection criteria giving special attention to every assembly part: for instance bolts and nuts , Stay welding , Overall sturdiness, Racking serial number and work load limit Legibility, Shelving etc .

Our inspectors also inspects if the shelf components and the loads carried by the racking and shelving comply with what it is designed to carry. We submit a detailed report with pictures af- ter each inspection with recommendations if any deviation is found that can lead to unsafe usage of your racking and shelving.

If damages are detected  during  the  inspection, many  potentially  serious  accidents  can be avoided and repair costs can usually be kept low. Since an in-depth analysis of the damage often reveals its causes , example: [Forklift operator bumps racking when loading spares or product] Corresponding preventative measures can be initiated subsequently, example: [Install low protection barriers on floor in front on Racking upright columns]

All racking and shelving are inspected against the relevant Manufacturers specification or Engineering drawing in terms of design, material strength, technical standards with regards to thickness of material used, Safety factors and legibility markings and then tagged safe for usage.

We incorporate this inspection to coincide with your quarterly lifting equipment inspection.
